February 2006

On February 8th, I got the chance to cover the Grammy Awards for the second time. Now, I'm not one to get star struck, but this event was definitely an exception. First of all, can I just say that I got a high five from Jay-Z backstage? We're talking Jay-Z here, people. This isn't someone you just happen to spot at the local grocery store. Anyway, as I was coming out of the bathroom, he and his huge entourage rounded the corner. Somehow we ended up walking side by side down the entire length of the hall so I did my best not to come across as some white girl from North Carolina. I knew my ghetto walk would come in handy one day!

As if that wasn't enough, when I returned to the pressroom, U2 walked in and I got to listen to them talk for 10 minutes. Talk about charismatic, these guys could turn Tom Cruise gay. Oh, wait.

Some other cool moments were seeing Faith Hill and Tim McGraw be all lovey dovey. During their interview, a reporter on the front row was on the phone so Tim (yes, apparently we're on a first name basis) stepped over onto her desk and reached down and picked up her phone with a big smile. He then handed it to Faith who said, "Hello? Who is this?" When the other person asked who she was, she said, "Um, Faith Hill." Ok, that doesn't sound as funny now but it was quite amusing at the time.

We also talked with John Legend (who was pretty cool), Allison Krauss (who was suprisingly funny), Linkin Park, Kelly Clarkson (very down-to-earth), Maroon 5, Keith Urban (also very charming), and will.I.am (awesome dude). Kanye West came in at the end to talk, crazy outfit and all. I just have to say, I dig his music, but this is the fourth time I've been around him and each time he's just beyond being full of himself -- it's almost nauseating.

But anyway, Sly Stone! Could you believe it? The whole pressroom gasped when he came out on stage. Even Keith Urban couldn't talk during his interview backstage because he was so surprised when he saw the monitor. People haven't seen this guy in over 13 years! And then he walks out on stage with a huge Mohawk. So all in all that was my night in a nutshell.
